Tips to Optimize Your Blog Posts for SEO Like a Pro

Most website owners and marketers would want their websites to rank on top of the search engine results pages (SERPs). However, this does not happen automatically, as many things need to be considered to accomplish this goal, such as content optimisation and link building. Having your website appear at the top of the SERPs is an indication that people have found your site helpful and have deemed it worthy of a click-through visiting your site.

Before optimising your posts for SEO, you first need to find out what people are searching for online. Luckily, there’s a keyword research tool that does exactly that. Search for any phrase you’re interested in writing about and add it into Keyword Planner; Google will provide insight into how many people have searched for that keyword and how popular it is. If people tend to search with longer phrases or include other words in their searches (i.e., BEST backpacking trip, instead of just backpacking trip), then those phrases might also be good ones to consider targeting with your content. 

Use your keyword three times in the intro paragraph.

The introduction is one of the most important paragraphs on your page. It’s where you can hook someone into reading your content. Make sure to rephrase it 3 times, so you have 3 different instances of repeating your keyword differently each time. Google, Bing & Yahoo algorithms (keyword mention/occurrence) make up 50% of SEO.

Use your keyword 5 times in the first 100 words.

Keywords in titles, headlines, and opening paragraphs are essential for search engine optimisation. Use your keyword five times within your first 100 words to get started. Don’t go overboard; you want to be relevant. If you’re writing about cell phones, my first 100 words might look like this: With cell phones becoming more popular every day, it’s hard not to notice them.

The headline needs to have your target keyword in it

Make sure your headline contains your target keyword or keyphrase. If it doesn’t, rewrite it so that it does. This is one of the most important things you can do for your SEO because Google will base your ranking on how often people search for specific keywords and phrases on Google, Facebook, Bing, Twitter and other search engines.

Add your keyword to the meta description and image alt tag.

It’s important to use your keyword in your description meta tag. Put that at the beginning of your first sentence (you can bold it), and then go back and create synonyms for it, using it once or twice more in your description. Since you’ll most likely want an image, include relevant keywords (don’t overdo it!) in that alt tag. Both of these help with search engine optimisation, which is how we determine whether a particular page will show up when someone searches for something specific! 

Do internal linking to other pages on your blog for improved rankings.

When you post an original piece of content, don’t just publish it and then forget about it—optimise it! Once you post, link back to your homepage or other popular pieces of content so that people can see more of what you have to offer. Internal linking shows Google that your page is relevant and is read by people (which will improve your ranking). It also allows you to provide context for readers who may not be familiar with all of your previous work. Don’t try too hard, though. You should do internal linking when it makes sense, not just for its own sake; make sure each piece is unique, valuable and shareable in its own right.

Add Images and Videos to Your Blog Posts

Adding images and videos to your posts is one of the fastest ways to optimise for search engines. This is because Google values videos and images as another indicator of an engaging, relevant post. Place essential keywords at the beginning of anchor text links.

The best way to optimise your anchor text links is by trimming and shortening them to contain no more than two words. This is one of my favourite tips because it allows you to include important keywords in your links without going overboard. Using anchors that are too long decreases their effectiveness at driving search engine traffic and can also lead people who view them to believe you’re hiding something—which isn’t good for business.
